Okay, so for our first fortnight of $100 to fuel had $25 left over, and the $200 for the shopping… well… it was a bit weirder, but for a first effort I think it was pretty good.
I knew we’d done some extra shopping, and I don’t think I calculated everything in, because we only ended up being around $50 over… maybe it was right, maybe it wasn’t, but from now we’re keeping ALL the shopping receipts, regardless of how they’re paid for. I’ve tweaked the app in my phone to be for shopping only, so I can just deduct expenses straight from that too – to take the market vegetables and eggs into account. We’ll see how that goes over the next two weeks.
The bank accounts are *almost* open and set up on internet banking, so now it will be a matter of transferring everything over to the new account. I’ll start tomorrow. Little bit by little bit, but I’ve only got a month left until I go away, so I really need to pull my finger out and get it started. I should start with a list I think, on my phone, so I can tick them off as I go.
Meal planning this week was a success I must say. I’m very pleased that we stuck to it, and we used what we had. I don’t know if we’ll keep it up, but it’s a good start. We’ll need to do another list for the next week, but I’ll worry about that tomorrow night I think – it’s late night shopping. Or for Saturday.
Things to do for the next fortnight:
- keep all grocery receipts
- make a list of all of my expenses that need to be changed over to the new account
- do meal planning for 5 days – remember lunches!
We’ll see how that pans out… hehehe

Tonight ended up being a leftover/rummage/fend for yourself, based on the fact that He has to work tonight, so I am not inspired to make tacos for only 2.
The bank accounts will need to stay as they are for another 12 months… while it would be simpler consolidating them, it will also be very time consuming and very frustrating (I *hate* dealing with banks!) for very little gain, so I’ve decided to leave them for now.
As for the investment account, I’ve discovered I can open it for much less than I thought – $500 with a monthly payment of $100, as opposed to a stand alone $2000 investment. I think if we take the lesser option, it won’t eat such a hole into the funds in the first instance, and the payments can just be skimmed off the savings account without much notice (at this stage – biting my tongue here, as I know the powers that be are wont to do strange things at times!). I’ll look into that tomorrow if I get a chance.
The other thing I need to do is check up on the house insurance – the summer months in the tropics have a tendency to throw nasty storms and/or cyclones at us, and I have a sneaking suspicion that there is one property that isn’t properly covered… ie. I found the paperwork I thought I’d sent 6 months ago… My laziness may just cost us a lot of money, and I need to sort it out as soon as possible. And LEARN!

This will be my third blog for the year… and given that it’s 18 Dec today, hopefully my last!
I’m intending to get my act together next year, in terms of being wiser with my money, and more sensible with my spending – particularly food shopping. I’m a member of the Simple Savings website, and have been for years, and while I’ve got some hints and tips over the years (and lots of inspiration!), I’ve never actually put one thing into practice. Some of the people there quite frankly scare me with their obsessiveness. I am not, and don’t want, to be like that. I would just like to be a little more concious of where my money is going, and to have less clutter in my life and my pantry. It’s a great website, and a good procrastinating activity for rainy days
Earlier this year we were menu planning in three day hits – which has fallen by the wayside unfortunately, and now we have a pantry full of random items that were brought for some recipe that never quite got everything, or got lost… I’m the biggest culprit I’m afraid – something will sound nice, but have some odd ingredient, then I’ll see it weeks later and buy it, only to have no clue of what it is the ingredient went with! The other time is when things are on special… and you stock up. And never use it… Perfect timing for my purchase of the Simple Savings $21 Challenge book, and needless to say, I’m feeling inspired.The idea is to take a week and use up what is in your fridge and pantry first, and spend no more than $21 on extra ingredients- if you have a pantry like ours, it’ll take longer. How long or how often you do the challenge is completely up to you, but I think once a month will be good to start with.
I think I’ll set up a page here with links to these recipes (mostly from other blogs you see), so I’ll be able to keep track. That’s the theory anyway! I want to get rid of some of the clutter in my life, as I’ve recently taken up a more transient lifestyle; after being in one area for nearly 20 years, I’m possibly moving every 3 – and have too much stuff. Way too much stuff!
So, some goals for me:
- clean out the pantry using the $21 Challenge.
- take note of the good ideas from the Simple Savings website, and put them into practice
- reduce clutter. Either sell it or give it away. Or throw it.
- menu planning – three days worth. Use CSIRO cookbooks for planning where possible. That’s what helps you maintain your weight and focus!
- get control of my life!
